How to Choose a Motor for a Mechanical Ventilation System or Ventilation Unit?

When replacing a CMV motor, first check its dimensions, power rating, power supply, airflow rate, and direction of rotation. The fan dimensions and mounting points must also match your system.

The required airflow depends on the volume to be ventilated and the ductwork system. A system that is too small or has significant pressure drops can reduce the motor’s actual performance.

Replacing an Existing Ventilation Motor

When looking for a replacement motor, don’t rely solely on your system’s brand. Be sure to compare the dimensions of the motor and impeller, as well as the power, current, voltage, rotational speed, and direction of rotation.

If in doubt, send us a photo of your old motor’s nameplate along with its dimensions. We can help you identify the closest match.

When should you replace a mechanical ventilation motor?

Significant vibrations, unusual mechanical noises, a motor that overheats, or a significant drop in airflow may indicate wear and tear on the motor, fan, or bearings. Before replacing the motor, also check that the ventilation system is not blocked.
