A carbon filter box (Coal bin) is a filtration system fitted to the extraction ductwork of a commercial kitchen hood to remove or greatly reduce cooking odours before the air is discharged outside. Our range runs from a small standalone unit to a large installation with 48 cartridges, with or without an integrated fan. Suitable for everything from a snack bar to a traditional kitchen running at full service without losing performance.

Frequently asked questions

Standalone or motorised carbon filter box: which should I choose?

A standalone carbon filter box only provides filtration and must be paired with a fan already installed on your ductwork. A motorised unit, such as the 9/9, 10/10 or 12/12 fan box packages, combines filtration and extraction in a single 230 V single-phase assembly, which is handy if you're starting from a new installation or want to move the fan away from the kitchen.

How many carbon cartridges do I need for my hood?

The number of cartridges depends on the length of your hood, the number of grease filters and the type of cooking. Our range runs from 5 cartridges (small setup, 1-metre hood) up to 48 cartridges (14,400 m³/h) for large kitchens. For accurate sizing, let us know the dimensions of your hood and your cooking equipment.

Can a kitchen with large cooking equipment use a carbon filter box?

Above a certain level of installed cooking power, fire safety regulations applicable to a kitchen may impose specific smoke extraction requirements, separate from simple activated carbon filtration. This depends on the project and local regulations: we recommend checking this point before choosing your filtration solution.

How often should activated carbon be replaced?

There is no fixed universal frequency: it depends on airflow rate, type of cooking and intensity of use. When effectiveness against odours decreases, that's the signal to renew the cartridges or the activated carbon. Regularly checking the upstream grease filter also helps preserve the lifespan of the carbon.

How do I maintain my installation with an odour control carbon filter box?

As a simple guideline, the carbon should be changed at least once a year, the G4 grease filter should be cleaned at least every quarter and replaced once a year, and finally the hood's own filters, the first barrier against odours, should be cleaned every week.
