What is an activated carbon filter box for a commercial range hood?

An activated carbon filter box is a filtration system installed in the extraction ductwork of a commercial range hood. It significantly reduces cooking odours before the extracted air is discharged outside.

The unit combines grease pre-filtration with activated carbon cartridges. It is particularly useful when the exhaust outlet is located close to homes, businesses or neighbouring properties that could be affected by cooking odours.

How does an activated carbon filter box work?

Air extracted by the range hood first passes through a grease filter, which protects the activated carbon. It then passes through cartridges containing activated carbon granules, which capture a significant proportion of the molecules responsible for cooking odours.

System efficiency depends on airflow, the type of cooking, the amount of activated carbon and its condition. The carbon must therefore be replaced regularly to maintain effective filtration.

How do you install an activated carbon filter box?

The odour filter box is installed in the ventilation ductwork between the range hood and the outdoor exhaust outlet. Depending on the installation, the fan motor can be located inside the hood, integrated into the filter box or installed in a separate extraction fan box.

The unit should remain easily accessible so that the grease filter can be checked and the activated carbon replaced or renewed.

How to choose an activated carbon filter box

The choice mainly depends on the dimensions of the range hood, the number of filters, the required extraction airflow and the type of cooking. Our filter boxes are available in different capacities to suit both small range hoods and larger commercial kitchen installations.

For cooking equipment that produces large amounts of grease or smoke, particularly deep fryers, griddles or woks, the filtration system should be selected according to the installation and its intended use.

Activated carbon filter box with or without a motor?

An activated carbon filter box without a motor provides filtration only and must be combined with a suitable extraction fan. An activated carbon filter box with an integrated motor combines filtration and extraction in a single unit, allowing the fan motor to be located outside the kitchen.

Maintenance and activated carbon replacement

Regular maintenance is essential to maintain good performance. The grease filter protects the cartridges and should be checked regularly. The activated carbon should be renewed when its effectiveness against odours begins to decrease.
