Speed Controller or Speed Switch for a Mechanical Ventilation System?

The choice depends mainly on the motor installed in your ventilation unit and the type of control you want.

A variable-speed drive allows you to gradually adjust the motor speed to control the exhaust or supply airflow. A 2- or 3-speed switch lets you select from the different speeds the motor is designed for.

How do you choose the right control for your motor?

Before ordering, check the motor’s supply voltage, power rating, and current rating. You should also verify whether the motor is designed to operate with a variable-speed drive or with multiple fixed speeds.

For a 230 V single-phase motor compatible with variable voltage, choose a variable-speed drive with a current rating higher than that of the motor. For a 400 V three-phase motor, speed control may require a suitable frequency converter.

Adjusting the Airflow of a Ventilation System

Speed control allows you to adjust the airflow to the system’s needs. However, be careful not to excessively and continuously reduce the speed of a motor that is not designed to operate at very low speeds, to prevent overheating.
